Improvements for Google Apps Users Running MS Outlook

Many Google Apps users continue to use MS Outlook as their email/calendar software of choice.  The Google Apps Sync for MS Outlook makes this easy, and has recently improved.

  • New Calendars: If you create a new calendar in MS Outlook, the new calendar will be created in Google Apps and will Sync.
  • Multiple Calendars: You can now sync multiple calendars from Google Apps to Outlook.  The sync will include all calendars for which you have write permissions and that are not hidden in your Google Calendar list.
  • Free/Busy with Dual Delivery: We often configure dual delivery — where email goes to Google Apps and Exchange at the same time — so that we can migrate users  in groups and phases.  When running in dual delivery and other Google Apps/Exchange mixed environments, you can now query free/busy information from the Exchange server.  To do so requires installing a free connector and a registry key on each client,  a service that is included in our unlimited support package.

Horizon’s CEO: Google Apps is Ready for Business

Allen Falcon, CEO of Horizon Info Services, was a key source and was quoted in a recent article in TechWorld, discussing how Google Apps is geared to meet the needs of business.

Offline Gmail Continues to Mature

While the not most-used feature among our Google Apps Premier Edition customers, offline Gmail is available and is no longer considered Beta.  Offline Gmail lets you compose and read your email without an Internet connection and without using other programs like Microsoft Outlook.

Recently, Google enhanced some of the features that let you manage messages for offline use.  You have more flexibility to download messages by time frame for offline use.  You can also manage download messages with specific labels — all or by time frame as well.

Helpful Hints: Google Calendar

Google Calendar recently benefited from a few small, but useful updates.

  • Snooze Alerts: You can now “snooze” a pop-up alert from the calendar, and be reminded again about an upcoming meeting or event.
  • Hide Calendars: Too many calendars in your list? Don’t want to see them all?  You can now hide calendars from your list.
  • Timezone AutoSync: Your calendar timezone is now synchronized to your display timezone.  If you travel much, this feature comes in handy.
